1.0 SUBJECT: TCPaccess - Telnet Services

2.0 DISTRIBUTION: All Current Users

3.0 FROM: Donald C. Heiman, Acting Director of DISC

4.0 PURPOSE: This guideline provides user instructions on how to use the telnet services offered by the MVS TCPaccess product.

5.0 BACKGROUND: Telnet is a standard TCP/IP protocol that describes how logins between computer systems may be accomplished. As long as the telnet rules are followed, described by several Internet Request for Comments (RFCs), these logins can be done across dissimilar computer platforms. RFCs are the means by which the Internet sets standards.

Interlink has provided two types of telnet services through its TCPaccess product. One service, client telnet, allows users that are connected to the DISC MVS host to telnet to other hosts from their "Welcome" screen. Client telnet has some limitations that will be described later in this guideline. Server telnet provides login facilities for those users who are connected to the MVS host via TCP/IP. Server telnet eliminates the need for typical SNA network devices such as controllers, SAA gateways, etc..

6.0 PROCEDURE: This discussion will provide instructions on how to use both client and server telnet described above.

6.1 Client Telnet

6.1.1 Limitations: Client telnet will only support applications on the server host that are NOT block-mode. UNIX commands such as ls, mail, etc. should work fine as long as those applications do not invoke screen formatting.

6.1.2 Usage: Enter the telnet command from the 3270 terminal screen as follows:

telnet host.abc.xyz.ddd (Example using domain name resolution)

or

telnet 111.222.333.444 (Example by IP address)

Whenever you are entering passwords at the server host password prompt, you may hide the password by pressing the PF9 key just before entering the password.

A series of screen images follows, showing a successful login to a SUN host. Since IP hosts have a wide variety of operating systems, your host(s) will likely display different results than shown below.

6.2 Server Telnet

6.2.1 Server telnet provides login support to the MVS host for those who are connected to the Internet. The user's IP stack must provide a telnet that is capable of supporting TN3270, the 3270 version of telnet. Line-mode telnet will NOT have the desired results.

6.2.2 Two criteria must be met to access the MVS host as explained below:

6.2.2.1 A logon to an MVS application, such as CICSP, requires that "virtual terminals" must be defined between the TCPaccess product and VTAM. The Internet address of your host is passed to TCPaccess when the telnet connection is made. That address is used to assign your SNA session to a pool of virtual terminals that have been configured for your IP address. If TCPaccess does not know about your IP address, you will receive a message:

No applicable LUrule for LU assignment

and the session will be terminated. In general, these pools of virtual terminals are assigned to state agencies. If you receive the message above, or the following message:

No LU available in LUpool

you should contact your agency network administrator. The latter message indicates the LUpool is currently full and may need to be expanded.

6.2.2.2 The attached appendix describes what telnet ports connect to which MVS application.

6.2.3 Keyboard mapping functions must be provided by the client TN3270 program. Those individuals responsible for implementing TN3270 on their systems must insure that the necessary keys are defined and that information is disseminated throughout their user community.

6.2.4 TN3270 sessions without activity for 60 minutes will be terminated by TCPaccess. This helps to conserve mainframe resources and serves to cleanup "hung" sessions.

6.2.5 A series of screen images follows, showing a successful login from a PC, connected to the Internet using FTP's PC/TCP product. Since IP hosts have a wide variety of operating systems and TN3270 programs, your host(s) will likely display different results than shown below.
