Job Description:

Job Summary: To assist the Director of Health Information Management and Health Information Manager with coding for billing of services as documented in patient medical records. These functions include use of ICD-10-CM, CPT and DSM codes for diagnosis and procedures for inpatient visits, clinic visits and ancillary testing: DRG assignment; communication with professional and department staffs; diagnostic and procedural coding; assists with ancillary testing coding as well as with diagnosis coding for admission, established and discharge medical records. This is a Temporary - Non-Benefits Eligible position. 


Job Description: Assigns ICD, CPT, and DSM codes to inpatient medical records, clinic records and ancillary records. Queries providers when code assignments are not straightforward or documentation in the record is inadequate, ambiguous, or unclear for coding purposes. Assists with development and coordination of educational and training programs for appropriate documentation and accurate coding for CIM staff, Medical Staff, Reimbursement personnel and Ancillary Departments. Assists with audits and monitoring of coding accuracy and documentation adequacy. Assists with providing feedback and focused educational programs as indicated by monitoring and audits. Assists with reviewing claim denials and rejections pertaining to coding and medical necessity issues and, when necessary, implements corrective action plan, such as educational programs, to prevent similar denials and rejections from recurring. Reports identified noncompliance issues; develops corrective action plans, and assists with follow up audits. Ensures that all billed services will have adequate documentation in the medical record. Ensure all services will be billed with coding being accurate, consistent, timely and complete for optimization of reimbursement. Ensure medical necessity for ancillary testing prior to billing, resulting in better compliance and reimbursement. Provide education for documentation for medical necessity. Keeps abreast of coding guidelines and reimbursement reporting requirements. Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or Association of Registered Health Care Professionals (ARHCP). Adheres to official coding guidelines. Back up of present coding tasks of Central CIM, Backup of Utilization Review Coordinator, Backup for transcription. Collects on data as requested (CITP, billing, etc.) Assist with chart review for data quality.

Minimum Requirements: Certified Coding Associate (CCA); Certified Coding Specialist (CSS): Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based (CCS-P); Certified by ARHCP; Registered Medical Coder-Associate (RMC-A); Registered Medical Coder (RMC); Registered Medical Manger (RMM): Certification of AAPC: Certified Procedural Coder (CPC): or Health Coding Specialist. Certification obtained within six-months of employment.


Preferred Criteria: Graduate from an AHIMA accredited Health Information Management program and/or currently enrolled in medical coding classes (i.e., ICD, CPT, etc.) and completion is expected within six-months.
