Job Description:

The selected individual will inspect scales at places of business in which the scales are used to ensure the scales are in compliance with state statutes and regulations.  The inspector will issue formal orders on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture for scales which are rejected during the inspection.  The inspector will have to travel and will be expected to stay out overnight on some occasions in order to use state resources efficiently.  This task will involve using a computer, reference materials, certified test weights, calculator, smart phone or camera, measuring tape and driving a vehicle including a semi-truck part of the year.  Use of the certified test weights will require the ability to lift a minimum of 60 pounds.  This task will require standing or walking the majority of the time most days.  Scale inspection reports may be reviewed daily by the employee’s supervisor for accuracy and completeness.  In a normal day anywhere from 3 to 75, or more, scales may be inspected, depending on the type of scale, and scale density within the geographic area the inspector is working.

The selected individual will inspect places of business at which the price of an item offered at retail is determined at a point of sale to ensure pricing accuracy and to determine compliance with state statutes and regulations.  The inspector will issue formal orders on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture to businesses whose pricing accuracy does not meet requirements.  In a normal day anywhere from 2 to 6 price verification inspections may be completed.

The selected individual will inspect places of business which sell pre-packaged products to ensure accurate labeling, weight, volume and item count of packaged products.  The inspector will issue formal orders on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture to businesses whose packages do not meet quantity or labeling requirements.  In a normal day anywhere from 5 to 20 package check inspections may be completed.

The selected individual will complete daily computer data file transfers.  They will complete weekly work reports, vehicle reports, expense reports, and other administrative reports as assigned.  Vehicle and equipment maintenance and cleaning will be done as needed.  Employee training will be assigned several times throughout the year and will usually involve traveling.  Employees will be expected to stay current with communications and changes to statutes and regulations.  The employee will be expected to complete all other duties as assigned.  The selected candidate will be required to obtain a Kansas Commercial Drivers License (CDL) within one year of starting work.  We will provide the employee CDL training, including driving time with our truck, time to take the exam and will cover the cost of the CDL license and exam.  Should the employee be unable to obtain a CDL employment may be terminated.

Salary:$16.56 per hour
