This position will remain posted until filled. This position will be located in Pratt County, Kansas
Job Summary:
- Provides compliance assistance to the regulated public including landowners, operators, both private and commercial applicators, dealers, and the pesticide industry as a whole. As related to assigned responsibilities, this employee is responsible for evaluating the health and environment effects of pesticides, and other regulated materials.
- Provides technical assistance in the administration of the Kansas Pesticide Law, the Chemigation Safety Law, the Agricultural Chemical Act, the Fertilizer Law, the Soil Amendment Act, and developing and implementing an effective state-wide regulatory program to ensure the safe and proper distribution and use of pesticides and fertilizer in Kansas. Work involves evaluation and implementation of Kansas pesticide, chemigation, and fertilizer laws and regulations, data collection, and participation in various training programs for both the public and industry.
- Maintains technical expertise in both research and regulatory developments. Studies or reviews program related scientific, government and other miscellaneous literature and discusses new developments with staff and noted experts to provide background data for developing new programs and upgrading current programs.
- Conducts investigations of pesticide use and misuse which may involve damages to animals, plants, wildlife, persons, property and water resources. Diagnose causes and extent of damages, secure all necessary data and report findings and /or recommend actions to the administration and when appropriate to other agencies. As related to these responsibilities, this employee is required to explain individual rights, procedures and laws to the general public as well as effectively communicate pertinent issues with other professionals and officials including attorneys.
Salary: $42,000 to $44,000/Year
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in the biological/ecological sciences, especially in the disciplines of agronomy, entomology, horticulture, or weed science, is required. A Master of Science degree in one of the specialties is preferred.
- Job knowledge at an advanced level in environmental/agricultural science
- Valid driver’s license
- Knowledge of relevant state and federal statutes, regulations, and policies is preferred
- Working knowledge of the commercial pesticide application industry is preferred
- Must be able to traverse non-uniform terrain while carrying equipment and/or samples
