DEFINITION OF WORK Summary This is direct contact work with the public carrying out regulatory functions regarding the use of state park areas. Standard Classification Factors Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision " Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks. Difficulty - LEVEL A: Routine Where the work is usually repetitive and the employee works from detailed instructions, the difficulty is usually limited to accuracy and speed. Complexity - LEVEL A: Work is a simple or routine nature requiring very little analytical thought. Tasks are clearly defined, highly organized, closely related and often repetitive. Few if any alternatives exist for methods or procedures to be used. Work is usually in the form of specific assignments and is closely reviewed for accuracy and progress. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually detailed, easy-to-follow instructions that cover all or most of the important aspects of the work. Workers at this level can readily determine the actions which need to be taken. Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL B: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are minor as the work is normally reviewed regularly and errors are usually detected in following operations. Errors may be disruptive to co-workers or may cause minor inefficiency. Costs due to errors are minimal. Contacts - LEVEL C: The purpose of the contact is to influence, motivate, conduct interviews, make formal presentations or counsel to achieve common understanding or solutions to problems when the information is sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are skeptical or uncooperative. Communication techniques and well developed communication skills become an important requirement at this level. Physical Demands - LEVEL B: The work requires light physical exertion. The employee may be required to perform handling activities with lightweight or easily moved items (e.g. books, file folders, boxes of office supplies, small machine parts, etc.); perform moving activities for brief periods; operate light equipment; perform repetitive motions for brief periods; confined to a work area. Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible. Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others. Distinguishing Features Differs from other Wildlife and Parks classes as this is the only class in which the primary responsibility is selling park permits and explaining park regulations. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Sells permits at park offices and entrances authorizing use of camping, picnic areas, or other state park facilities; makes rounds of park areas to verify possession of permits by patrons, and issues permits if necessary. Provides information to patrons regarding park facilities and explains regulations of use; directs patrons to camp sites and picnic areas. Inspects grounds for proper use of facilities and for fire and safety hazards, vandalism, and violation. Keeps records of visitors; turns cash over to appropriate staff. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge Knowledge of the park operation and rules and regulations pertaining to use of facilities. Abilities *Ability to meet the public courteously and to give information and directions. *Ability to make change and account for permits issued and money received. *Ability to keep records. *Needed at Entry MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: None required.
