DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is highly skilled and/or specialized painting work associated with maintenance, remodeling or construction projects.

Work may involve supervising a painting crew, providing on-the-job training, and planning and directing project operations involving the performance of a variety of skilled painting tasks.

Work involves performance of routine and complex painting within the trade using a variety of applications and materials involving a number of surfaces. Highly complex and skilled knowledge is called for when applying and updating surfaces in restoration of older or historic facilities and show case buildings that have high public viewing.

Standard Classification Factors

Supervision Received - LEVEL C: "Under direction…" Employees at this level usually receive a general outline of the work to be performed and are generally free to develop their own sequences and methods within the scope of established policies. New, unusual, or complex work situations are almost always referred to a superior for advice. Work is periodically checked for progress and conformance to established policies and requirements.

Difficulty - LEVEL C: Considerable…Duties, which require a high degree of concentration because of the many factors, which must be considered and weighed before a decision can be reached. Usually positions that require planning, developing, and coordinating programs and directing fairly large groups of people fall into this category.

Complexity - LEVEL C: Work is of a standardized nature that may involve a variety of duties. Analytical thought becomes more important at this level due to increased data and changing situations. Tasks usually have several steps, some of which may not be directly related. Alternatives may exist for processes or methods to be used in solving problems. Workers at this level exercise a moderate amount of independent judgment. Work is controlled by routine review and reporting or in consultation with supervisors, design staff and construction managers. When guidelines exist at this level, they tend to be more complicated or technical in nature requiring careful interpretation.

Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL D: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are significant as the work may be rarely if ever reviewed. Incorrect work methods and/or applications can cause irreparable damage to renovation of historic buildings or valuable antique furnishings. Errors may cause major program failure or a high degree of confusion. Injuries to other due to serious or incapacitation or both and costs due to errors are substantial.

Contacts - LEVEL B: The purpose of the contact is to plan, coordinate and advise on work efforts, interpret guidelines or instructions, elicit opinions or give guidance. Well developed communication skills are required.

Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion and occasional work from heights.

Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts associated with materials that require careful ventilation and avoidance of inhalation.

Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL B: Involves functional leadership responsibility. Seen as an "expert" or "lead worker" in this trade with knowledge of a wide range of application techniques. As a "project leader", may be responsible for a phase(s) of a single project, which includes planning, coordinating and reviewing the work of others. This level may also involve limited administrative responsibility such as participating in the evaluation of work performance.

Distinguishing Features

Differs from the Painter in which the work primarily involves routine painting.

Differs from the Facilities Specialist which performs work as a master craftsman or as a specialist in multiple crafts or trades.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Performs normal interior and exterior painting treatments, plus as needed tint paints and match color to specifications. Reads and works from blueprints; estimates materials; and directs the work of less skilled painters.

Performs custom painting work with specialized commercial finishes such as Zolotone or vinyl wall coverings. Such materials are costly and replacement is expensive if not applied properly.

Replasters and matches textured surfaces; strips and refinishes woodwork. May apply proper bonding primers for surfaces. Matches existing stains which are obsolete or faded.

Paints with a variety of equipment including spray guns to paint vehicles, metal surfaces or apply textured ceilings.

Performs screen printing or signage for buildings.

Determines type, cuts, and glazes various types of glass in windows and doors.

Mixes plaster, mortar, and other masonry components; pours, levels, smoothes, and shapes components in preparing various types of epoxy floors.

Lays out and marks parking lots and crosswalks using approved products. Operates various line lasers, heat guns, and temperature gauges to assure proper adhesion.

Sets-up and operates all scaffolding equipment needed to accomplish work, including stationary scaffolds, mobile scaffolds, boson chairs and swing stages using appropriate safety precautions.

Provides on-the-job training for other painters on assigned work projects; reviews finished work for quality; recommends corrective measures for any deficiencies.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge

*Knowledge of the standard equipment, practices and techniques of the trade and of paints, varnishes, stains, shellacs, lacquers, enamels, solvents, and other materials used in painting.

*Knowledge of methods of preparing surfaces for painting or other methods of finishing.

*Knowledge of occupational hazards and the safety precautions of the trade.

*Knowledge of commercial applications and other treatments.

*Knowledge of the restoration techniques and custom matching.

Abilities

*Ability to assemble and work from ladders and high scaffolds.

*Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

*Ability to read, interpret, and work from sketches, blueprints, and specifications.

*Ability to care for the tools and equipment of the trade.

*Ability to apply paints and other finishes by brush, roller or air guns.

*Ability to mix paints to match, blend, harmonize and contrast colors, tints and shades.

*Ability to prepare and maintain estimates, records and reports.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Two years of experience as a painter
