DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is skilled work as a journeyman printer for the computerized photocomposition system in the Division of Printing.

The work involves operating computerized equipment to format and photocompose a variety of printing material. Work includes writing formats, inputting and editing material to be printed, and operating photocomposition and film processing equipment. Work may also include composing, typesetting, correcting proofs, job makeup and preparing layout work. Work is performed in accordance with standard trade practices.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Writes and corrects original formats to input typesetting commands in computerized photocomposition system.

Operates computerized photocomposition equipment to produce type on photo-sensitive paper or film via computer input.

Operates automatic film processor which includes mixing chemicals for processor and cleaning the processor.

Operates make-up master, Lino-screen composer and computerized composition and character translation devices to input and edit material into the computer.

Prepares type for final output in paginated format by using knowledge of footnote format, tables, wraparounds, running heads and left and right margins.

Sets type, pastes-up jobs and book forms or reproduction proofs, reads and corrects galley, job, and page proofs and performs makeup, composition and layout work.

Performs layout work.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge

*Knowledge of the basic elements of the printing trade and of the standard and most recently developed practices, materials, techniques, and process used in a composition room including mark-up of copy for composition and job formatting.

*Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of computerized photocomposition systems, and other composing room equipment.

*Knowledge of current typesetting-pagination procedures.

*Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

*Knowledge of English grammatical rules, punctuation, and spelling.

Abilities

*Ability to write and correct original formats, to set type, and to make-up, read, and correct proofs.

*Ability to type mixed alphanumeric text rapidly and accurately.

*Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

*Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other employees.

Skills

*Skill in the operation of the specialized equipment of the composing room, including computerized photocomposition equipment and related electronic machinery.

*Necessary at Entry

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Four years of experience in desktop applications, batch pagination, creating and preparing files for output as digital files for various types of equipment or successful completion of a four year Printer-Electronic Photocomposition Apprenticeship.
