RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST II

8327F2

Pay Grade: 27

DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is highly technical work performing the full range of prescribed diagnostic X-ray procedures except for special advanced procedures, sonography and nuclear medicine.

Work involves performing many or all of the diagnostic roentgenological procedures such as skull, chest, bone, gastrointestinal, urinary tract, contrast media, non-contrast media and digital imaging procedures of all body organs and systems, as well as radiologic surgical and bedside procedures. Work also involves responsibility for applying ionizing radiation and non-ionizing infra-red imaging systems to patients for diagnosis of disease.

Standard Classification Factors

Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision..." Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks.

Difficulty - LEVEL B: Average... Where the employee is confronted with a variety of duties susceptible to different methods of solution which, in turn, places a correspondingly higher demand upon resourcefulness and concentration. Positions which require the analysis and evaluation of raw data and the rendering of conclusions would, in many instances, fall into this category.

Complexity - LEVEL C: The purpose of the contact is to influence, motivate, conduct interviews, make formal presentations or counsel to achieve common understanding or solutions to problems when the information is sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are skeptical or uncooperative. Communication techniques and well developed communication skills become an important requirement at this level.

Consequences of Actions and Decisions - LEVEL C: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are limited in scope and effect as the work is reviewed occasionally. Errors may cause moderate inefficiency. Costs due to errors may be significant.

Contacts - LEVEL C: The purpose of the contact is to influence, motivate, conduct interviews, make formal presentations or counsel to achieve common understanding or solutions to problems when the information is sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are skeptical or uncooperative. Communication techniques and well developed communication skills become an important requirement at this level.

Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion.

Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible.

Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL B: Involves functional leadership responsibility. As a "senior worker", performing essentially the same or similar work as those overseen, responsibility includes training, instructing, scheduling and reviewing. As a "project leader" may be responsible for a phase(s) of a single project which includes planning, coordinating and reviewing the work of others. This level may also involve limited administrative responsibility such as participating in the evaluation of work performance.

Distinguishing Features

Differs from the Radiologic Technologist I class which provides for the performance of only a limited variety of diagnostic X-rays.

Differs from the Radiologic Technologist III class which includes responsibility for advanced roentgenological procedures in angiographic, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Operates a wide variety of radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment and infrared imaging systems in applying prescribed ionizing or non-ionizing radiation to patients for the diagnosis of disease.

Selects, transports and operates mobile radiographic, fluoroscopic or infrared imaging equipment to operating room or bedside of patient for all types of roentgenographic procedures or scans.

Prepares opaque media and assists the radiologist in administering media to patients; prepares and administers skin coolants prior to thermographic examinations.

Maintains patient records; schedules patients; selects technical exposure factors and accessory equipment needed on an individual patient basis.

Positions patients for roentgenographic procedures and thermographic scans, providing proper immobilization and radiation protective devices; checks patients' comfort during examinations, administering first aid or resuscitation as needed.

Supervises or assists with the instruction of student technologists and ancillary personnel.

Maintains skills and updates knowledge through continuing study of developments in roentgenographic procedures and equipment; assists in developing new techniques and accessory equipment.
