DEFINITION OF WORK

Summary

This is semi-skilled work performed in the support of routine maintenance tasks and activities in the trades and crafts or groundskeeping or pest control work .

Standard Classification Factors

Supervision Received - LEVEL B: "Under general supervision…" Employees working under general supervision usually receive some instructions with respect to the details of most assignments but are free to develop their own work sequences within established procedures, methods and policies. They are often physically removed from their supervisor and subject to only periodic checks.

Difficulty - LEVEL A: Routine… Where the work is usually repetitive and the employee works from detailed instructions, the difficulty is usually limited to accuracy and speed.

Complexity - LEVEL B: Work is of a structured nature including duties that have several related steps. This level involves simple analysis of data, identification of easily distinguishable facts and recognition of differences in related situations. Workers at this level exercise limited independent judgment in determining methods or procedures to be used in making minor decisions. Work is normally controlled by frequent review and consultation with supervisors. When guidelines exist at this level, they are usually specific and aid in determining an approach to problems or situations. Workers at this level must be able to identify basic differences in situations to determine the actions which need to be taken.

Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL B: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are minor as the work is normally reviewed regularly and errors are usually detected in following operations. Errors may be disruptive to co-workers or may cause minor inefficiency. Costs due to errors are minimal.

Contacts - LEVEL A: The purpose of the contact is to obtain, clarify, give or screen established factual information, regardless of the type (i.e., easily understood or technical) within a well-defined relationship. Normal communication skills are required.

Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion.

Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible.

Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL A: No supervisory or leadership responsibility; may explain work instructions or assist in training others.

Distinguishing Features

Differs from General Maintenance and Repair Technician class in which work is semi-skilled work in the maintenance of buildings and grounds and skilled work in one building or maintenance craft or trade.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Assists skilled workers.

Mows grass with small tractor or riding mower; operates jack hammer occasionally operates trucks, fork lifts, front end loaders and other mechanical equipment incidental to regular assignments.

Assists in building forms, pouring and finishing cement, replacing water lines and rejoining valves, running conduit and repairing appliances. Erects partitions and installs ceilings, and paints walls and woodwork.

Changes air conditioner filters; replaces fluorescent light tubes and ballasts; repairs towel racks, shelves and door closers; paints doors, walls, and picnic tables.

Irrigates, fertilizes, prunes, sprays, cultivates, rakes and mulches ornamental vegetation.

Performs routine pst control preventive measures; conducts inspections; investigates complaints from citizens or agency staff; mixes and maintains records of chemicals; and uses various methods to exterminate rodents, mosquitoes, termites, bats, roaches and other pests.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge

*Knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in maintenance construction and repair.

*Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized construction and maintenance equipment.

Abilities

*Ability to understand and carry out specific oral or written instructions.

*Ability to lead a small crew of manual laborers.

*Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.

*Ability to use basic hand and power tools and equipment.

*Required at Entry.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
