PLUMBER SENIOR3284N2 Pay Grade: 21 22 DEFINITION OF WORK Summary This is highly skilled plumbing work performing construction and maintenance tasks and overseeing work of subordinate workers or those in training. The work of this class involves the performance of skilled tasks in the planning, installation, and repair of plumbing and steam systems, fittings, and accessories in structures. Standard Classification Factors Supervision Received - LEVEL C: "Under direction " Employees at this level usually receive a general outline of the work to be performed and are generally free to develop their own sequences and methods within the scope of established policies. New, unusual, or complex work situations are almost always referred to a superior for advice. Work is periodically checked for progress and conformance to established policies and requirements. Difficulty - LEVEL C: Considerable Duties which require a high degree of concentration because of the many factors which must be considered and weighed before a decision can be reached. Usually positions that require planning, developing, and coordinating programs and directing fairly large groups of people fall into this category. Complexity - LEVEL C: Work is of a standardized nature that may involve a variety of duties. Analytical thought becomes more important at this level due to increased data and changing situations. Tasks usually have several steps, some of which may not be directly related. Alternatives may exist for processes or methods to be used in solving problems. Workers at this level exercise a moderate amount of independent judgment. Work is controlled by routine review and reporting to or consultation with supervisors. When guidelines exist at this level, they tend to be more complicated or technical in nature requiring careful interpretation. Consequence of Actions or Decisions - LEVEL C: Consequences of actions or decisions at this level are limited in scope and effect as the work is reviewed occasionally. Errors may cause moderate inefficiency. Costs due to errors may be significant. Contacts - LEVEL B: The purpose of the contact is to plan, coordinate and advise on work efforts, interpret guidelines or instructions, elicit opinions or give guidance on the basis of facts to resolve common issues or problems when the information is not sensitive in nature or the individuals or groups are working toward mutual goals and have basically cooperative attitudes. Well developed communication skills are required. Physical Demands - LEVEL C: The work requires moderate physical exertion. Environmental Conditions - LEVEL B: The work environment involves moderate hazards, risks or discomforts. Exposure to minor deviations from pleasant environmental conditions is normal. Minor to serious injuries are possible. Supervision/Leadership - LEVEL B: Involves functional leadership responsibility. As a "senior worker", performing essentially the same or similar work as those overseen, responsibility includes training, instructing, scheduling and reviewing. As a "project leader" may be responsible for a phase(s) of a single project which includes planning, coordinating and reviewing the work of others. This level may also involve limited administrative responsibility such as participating in the evaluation of work performance. Distinguishing Features Differs from the Plumber class in which work is skilled plumbing tasks primarily performing routine maintenance duties. EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Diagnoses leaks, stoppages, inadequate supply or faulty operation of water, steam, gas and air lines. Closely inspects suspected problem areas and components related to the building mechanical systems and utilities. Plans, installs, repairs, replaces, and maintains copper, steel, cast iron, plastic, and clay piping systems in order to maintain hot and cold water supply systems, sewage and drainage systems in operational condition and to control the movement or containment of fluids and gases; measures, bends, cuts, reams, and threads pipe; makes lead joints, sweats fittings; taps water and gas lines; greases and packs expansion joints on steam lines and insulating pipes. Rebuilds circulating pumps on the heating and cooling systems; condensate and boiler feed pumps on steam generating and heating equipment, by replacing defective bearings, seals, packings, shafts, and other pump parts. Plans, fabricates, installs and maintains extensions and modifications to steam distribution and steam condensate collection systems. Plans and installs plumbing and fixtures in renovation or construction projects by removing all items to be replaced, setting fixtures and fittings, insulating pipes, and performing other necessary plumbing tasks. Plans, fabricates and welds metals and other materials necessary to complete plumbing projects. Inspects service rooms and tunnels located throughout the facility and the grounds in order to detect any abnormalities or malfunctions. Supervises craft helpers in performing unskilled and semi-skilled plumbing tasks. Records work done on maintenance forms using accurate information including materials used and actual work done. Installs and repairs steam and chilled water pipes and components of hearing and ventilation equipment. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS Knowledge *Knowledge of the standard practices, tools and materials of the plumbing trade. Knowledge of state and local plumbing codes. *Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Abilities *Ability to read, interpret and work from sketches, blueprints and specifications. Ability to inspect projects for adherence to quality of work, codes and engineering drawings. *Ability to understand and carry out general oral and written instructions. Skills *Skill in the use of tools, materials and equipment used in the plumbing trade. *Necessary at Entry MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Two years of experience as a plumber.
