| The Kansas Public Employees Retirement System recently
sent all KPERS Designated Agents a message regarding changes to
the retirement plan that affect employees hired between July 1,
2008 and June 30, 2009. In part, the message explained that these
employees will become members on July 1, 2009, no matter when they
are hired.
However, since July 1, 2009 does not fall at the beginning of a
pay period, KPERS has clarified that contributions for these employees
should begin with the first day of the first payroll period beginning
on or after July 1, 2009. For employees hired between July 1, 2008
and June 30, 2009 use July 12, 2009. For employees first employed
on July 1, 2009, or later use their first day of employment as the
effective date.
As an FYI, the KPERS message follows:
“We have posted a new flyer to our web site for you to
give to new employees hired between July 1, 2008, and June 30, 2009,
in KPERS-eligible positions.
While they will have the current benefits, their “year
of service” will be affected by the transition to the new
tier of benefits. Employees in this group will become members July
1, 2009, no matter when they are hired.
