Job Description:

Four Positions - 999 Hour - Duties: Conduct foot, bicycle and vehicle patrols both in and near the Kansas Capitol Complex, Cedar Crest and other State properties, in Shawnee County, to ensure safety and security to the affected areas, employees and citizens. Perform the basic functions and duties of a police officer, which includes the enforcement of statutes and administrative rules and regulations of the State of Kansas, in an effort to improve the safety of its citizens and the public. While on patrol, issue citations and warnings, make arrests, respond to calls for service, conducts vehicle inspections, investigates motor vehicle accidents, assist disabled motorists, provide emergency medical services, and report road and weather conditions. Utilize Agency computer programs and software; properly complete KIBRS, KDOT and Agency related forms when required, while ensuring the proper use of in-car radio and camera/audio recording systems. When assigned, provides security during special assignments/events and provide security to State agencies when required and approved by a supervisor. Uphold the United States and Kansas Constitutions, Bill of Rights, Kansas Statutes Annotated, city ordinances, departmental rules and regulations and general principles of police work, at all times. Operate police rated/agency vehicles in a safe and efficient manner and within the guidelines established by the Kansas Highway Patrol. Multitask during emergency/high stress situations. Provides traffic control and render first aid and assistance to citizens and motorists when necessary. When requested, provide courtroom testimony and depositions, conduct money escorts for State agencies, and assist local agencies with hi-priority calls. Provide protection and safety to the Governor’s family and residence (Cedar Crest), while monitoring security cameras assigned to that location.

Public Contact: Establish and maintain professional contact with government officials, legislators, dignitaries, state employees, visitors, and all other citizens, to uphold the image and reputation of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Utilize good communication skills when making contact with members of the community, in order to maintain control of each and every situation. Build and maintain good working relations with other law enforcement agencies. Reporting: Properly complete and submit written reports and forms, in compliance with KIBRS, KDOT and KHP standards Evaluates each situation, to determine the necessity for reporting, while utilizing Agency computers, programs and software to promptly complete and submit each required form. When applicable, mark and packages evidence, to ensure proper documentation and storage of such evidence, for examination and prosecution purposes. Reports organized with narration given in chronological order; concisely written; easy-to-understand using neat and legible handwriting; and requiring correct spelling, grammar, punctuation and word use.

Minimum Qualifications:  High school diploma or equivalent and an unrestricted driver’s license (corrected vision accepted).

Necessary Special Requirements:  Must be a United States citizen and at least 21 years of age. Must complete a basic law enforcement training program recognized by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission and obtain certification as a law enforcement officer from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission before being given permanent status. This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties and therefore, candidates cannot have been convicted of, and must be free of any diversions from, a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C. § 922 (d) (9) and (g) (9). Must submit to a psychological test, medical examination, drug screening and polygraph.  Must be able to work rotating shifts, flexible hours and/or ten hour shifts. Must be able to perform all essential job functions and shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of self or others.

Preferred: Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Kansas.  One year experience in the criminal justice field.

Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Indicates a good command of the English language, both oral and written. Good people skills and ability to deal with a variety of people. Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law. Ability to extend limbs, walk, run, stand, bend, lift, twist, stoop, climb stairs, operate vehicle and get in and out of a vehicle.
