Job Description:

Lab Improvement Specialist (K0231867) in the Kansas Health & Environmental Laboratories

Manage the environmental laboratory accreditation program under state regulations and in accordance with the TNI/NELAC national laboratory accreditation program policies. Plans, coordinates and develops the environmental laboratory accreditation program along with other state accrediting authorities.  Responsible for the day-to-day management of the environmental accrediting program. Program manager for the Kansas TNI/NELAC program participation. Evaluate technical competence and performance of laboratories and contractors. Develops and reviews KHEL Quality Assurance documents as they relate to the laboratory improvement program. Interact with IT staff to participate in the design, development, and modifications of the accreditation program database. Manages contracts with outside laboratory assessment organizations.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a natural science field and two years of experience in laboratory procedures/analysis. Additional experience in the areas listed above may be substituted for the required education as determined relevant by the agency.

Necessary Special Requirements:
• Must complete two required courses and pass the written exams given for the EPA Drinking Water Certification program within one year after being hired in this position. Must complete a course and pass written exam for NELAC assessor course within one year after being hired in this position. Must complete refresher training course once per year.
• Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Criteria: 
• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Microbiology
• Advanced Degree in Natural Science
• Experience writing regulations and policies. 
• Two or more years of experience in laboratory procedures/analyses utilizing EPA approved methodologies for regulatory compliance testing.
• One or more years of experience in a quality assurance/quality control role in a regulated laboratory.
• Experience in an Environmental Laboratory
• Completion of or participation in EPA Drinking Water Certification. 
• Completion of or participation in NELAC assessor courses.
• Experience with and/or training in EPA DW Cert or NELAC Assessments
• Experience in creating SOPs, Test Methods, and/or QA Plans
• Presentation and Training skills
• Database skills
• Good communication skills and ability to work in a team
• Experience with analytical instrumentation
• Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
• Proofreading, editing, attention to detail

$22.16 hourly; can vary depending upon experience and qualifications.
