Job Description:

Job Summary: The specific contributions of the Activity Specialist I at this facility will include provision of both individual and group treatment for patients on multiple treatment units. The incumbent predominantly provides group therapy, with an average of 4 groups per day. Time may also be allocated for individual music therapy or assessment services. Group and individual services are provided to help the patients learn, develop, and apply skills to manage stress, improve cognitive organization, or express feelings. This can be particularly helpful for patients who find it difficult to express themselves in words. The incumbent is also expected to communicate regularly and clearly with staff and attend meetings related to patient progress. Documentation of patient contact is completed within an electronic medical record.  

Job Description: Provide creative expressive or therapeutic recreation treatment groups. These sessions are designed to address patient treatment goals as indicated on the Master Treatment Plan. These music therapy applications may be used as follows: to help the patient gain insight; to encourage self expression; to provide constructive emotional release; to teach coping skills; to identify and strengthen personal assets. Employee provides these direct treatment services to patients with supportive supervision. These tasks are reviewed through documentation of patient attendance and outcome of treatment.  Document services provided to patients with regard to the applicable goal in their individual Treatment Plan.  It is important that documentation of these services is both meaningful and timely.  Provide verbal feedback to Interdisciplinary Treatment Team & other members of PTS as needed.  Collect and submit outcome data as required. Assesses patient’s emotional, cognitive, communicative, and social functioning, focusing on the patient’s needs and strengths through direct observations made during Creative Arts Therapy groups or Assessment sessions. Documents observations and recommendations for treatment goals and interventions in the Patient Care System (PCS) and verbally reports findings to the psychological and Therapy Services (PTS) team as indicated.  Work with the Psychological & Therapeutic Services team to assist in providing a therapeutic environment for all patients at the hospital.  Incumbent will also participate in PTS meetings to exchange information to receive and provide input into the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team process and to discuss treatment program issues. Meets with supervisor individually and within context of Activity Therapy meetings to give and receive feedback and discuss different treatment program issues. This task is reviewed for quality through direct supervisory observation.

Preferred Criteria: certification or eligibility for certification in the area of focus (if such a credential is available).

Minimum Requirements: Four years of experience in therapeutic recreation, horticulture therapy, or one of the creative arts such as art, dance/movement, or music. Education may be substituted for experience as deemed relevant by the agency.
