Job Description:

Geology Specialist (K0237025) in the Bureau of Environmental Remediation

Manages relatively complex environmental projects at federal facilities, Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) and other sites. Coordinates, performs, and evaluates elements of the investigative, monitoring, and remedial processes at these sites to ensure projects are completed in accordance with applicable statutes, program guidelines, and quality management plans
Prepares, reviews, and/or evaluates technical work plans, sampling programs, proposals, and reports associated with characterization and/or remedial actions at sites throughout Kansas for completeness, accuracy, and technical adequacy. Analyzes and interprets technical data to formulate solutions to project-specific environmental problems. Documents site actions through written correspondence with project stakeholders
Performs field work to include site inspections, oversight of field investigations and remediation, and collection of soil, sediment, groundwater, or other types of field data. Collects samples, coordinates analysis, and interprets data for quality assurance purposes. Performs field audits for Federal Facilities and other bureau programs to ensure compliance with applicable requirements
Updates agency databases and files to document actions and decisions at each assigned project. Communicates and consults with the Unit Chief, Section Chief, Bureau Director and other levels of management. Coordinates project milestones with management to ensure agency policies and priorities are met
Prepares and presents programmatic, scientific, and regulatory presentations within KDHE and to various regulatory, public, and industry groups. Represents the agency/bureau/section/program at public meetings, technical meetings, and workshops including the technical discussion of data, process and procedures for assigned projects

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or other related field.

Necessary Special Requirements:
• Employee must pass a physical examination, within six months of hire, which certifies the individual can work in the necessary personal protective equipment.
• Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Criteria: 
• Master’s degree in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or related field
• Some graduate work in geology/hydrogeology/earth science/geoscience or related field
• ArcGIS
• Experience performing environmental contractor oversight
• Experience preparing remediation reports for volatile organic compounds, metals and contamination
• Experience in preparing and/or reviewing soil and groundwater assessment
• Experience in collection and interpretation of soil, sediment, groundwater, and air samples
• Experience with Superfund (CERCLA) and/or RCRA Programs
• Experience managing environmental investigation and remediation projects
• Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
• Proofreading, editing, attention to detail

$20.13 hourly; can vary depending upon experience and qualifications.
