Job Description:

KDHE participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security, with information from each new employee’s Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

Microbiologist (K0235112) in the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories.

Serve as testing personnel (high complexity testing), as defined by CLIA for bacteriology, parasitology, and mycobacteriology areas. Perform technical duties in the identification of bacteria and report results in an accurate and timely manner. These duties include laboratory isolation of bacterial pathogens from human clinical samples and identification of cultures using biochemical analysis, microscopy, and serological tests. Parasitology testing involves performing microscopic analyses of processed clinical specimens for detection of endo and ecto parasites, and in some cases macroscopic and immunological analyses of clinical specimens.  Mycobacteriology testing involves isolation and identification of mycobacteria using culture, microscopy, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and nucleic acid amplification.  Duties in the pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and WGS laboratory include preparation of Salmonella, Shigella, E.coli O157, STEC, and Campylobacter isolates, restriction endonuclease digestion of bacterial DNA, agarose gel preparation, electrophoresis of the digested DNA, staining agarose gels, and digital image capture of these gels.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology or Chemistry or other related fields. Experience may be substituted for education as determined relevant by the agency.

Necessary Special Requirements:
Within the 6 month probationary period, must successfully pass an FBI background check pursuant to Select Agent Rule 42 CFR part 73 in order to have access to potential agents of bioterrorism.

Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.

Preferred Criteria: 

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher in biology or microbiology; Preferred 24 semester hours of science that include 6 semester hours of Chemistry, 6 semester hours of Biology, and twelve semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination.
• ASCP certification in Microbiology or Medical Technician
• Operation of microscopes
• General Microbiology practices
• Preparing and reading slides
• Identification of microorganisms using microscopic analysis
• Experience in working under BSL-3 laboratory conditions
• Experience in identifying bacteria, mycobacteria, or parasites
• One year experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory
• WGS or sequencing experience
• Bacterial identification experience
• Antibiotic resistance genotypic or phenotypic identification
• MALDI experience
• Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
• Proofreading, editing, attention to detail

$20.13 hourly; can vary depending upon experience and qualifications.
